Bill Gates in India to receive Indira Gandhi Prize

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is in India to receive the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development. He will receive the award on behalf of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has been providing grants for public health activities, notably in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and communication.

During his visit, Gates is likely to meet Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday. He is also likely to hold a telephonic conversation with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Though Gates has a tightly packed schedule, his main focus would be accepting the prize on behalf of the foundation, according to officials at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates will also take summary of work done by his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in India, according to sources.

In 2003, the Foundation had launched Avahan, an initiative to support India's efforts to reduce the spread of HIV.
