Alcatel-Lucent Plans To Cut Around 850 Jobs In France

Alcatel-Lucent SA aims to cut 850 jobs in France as part of a plan to save several hundred million euros (dollars) this year, the company said Thursday.

The telecommunications network equipment maker told French employees the job cuts would be made over this year and next.

Last December, Alcatel-Lucent Chief Executive Ben Verwaayen unveiled a plan to cut costs by euro750 million in 2009 through measures that include cutting white collar staff and contractors.

Those moves came on top of previously announced plans to cut 16,500 jobs by the end of this year. The company employed a total of 76,410 as of the end of 2007.
