Patni Computer looks to enter the big league

IT services firm Patni Computer Services wants to move into the league of top five Indian software providers that will give it an access to bigger contracts and projects. The company will evaluate acquisitions in the areas of business process outsourcing and infrastructure management services, CEO Jeya Kumar said. However, considerations for acquisitions will be intellectual property and not scale, said Mr Kumar.

Patni is among the top-10 software exporters. Mr Kumar joined Patni after a brief stint in MphasiS and a long career in Sun Microsystems. In Sun Microsystems, he was responsible for its $5-billion services business. “Organic growth will be slight to moderate given the current realities. Inorganic growth is an option, but should never be a strategy,” Mr Kumar told ET in an interview.
