5,000 Wipro employees likely to face the axe

Source: mydigitalfc.com
Wipro Technologies is right- sizing. To improve operational efficiency, it has decided to sack more employees than it usually does on the basis of performance. In the current quarter (January-March), 7 to 8 per cent of the people working in its global IT services division will have to leave.

In normal times, only 0.5 per cent of the employees are sacked for professional reasons. But the proportion was higher at about 2 per cent in the last two quarters. In the current quarter, it will rise above 7 per cent. The global IT services division, mainly catering to the US and European markets, had 60,605 people at the end of December.

Financial Chronicle learns from several Wipro employees that the number of people on the hit list could be as high as 5,000. This, however, could not be confirmed with company officials. FC emailed a questionnaire to the company’s human resources head, Pratik Kumar, who, in response, only said, “Wipro would not like to comment on this.’’

The people being eased out are mainly freshers not yet confirmed in their jobs and staff who have three to five years’ experience. Also, a number of managerial- level employees (such as vice-presidents, general managers, project managers and project leaders earning over Rs 12 lakh annually) are also facing the axe. Earlier, senior- level staff rarely came under such intense scrutiny.

An employee on the hit list told FC on condition of anonymity, “At the moment, employees with higher salaries are being laid off to save cost.”

Another senior- level employee, who has spent a over a decade in Wipro, said people at that level had been asked to justify their positions. He said, “Senior people have to take on more responsibilities. We have to manage more employees in out teams, acquire more clients and more projects.”

Senior employees will get about two to three months to justify their presence in the company and if they fail to do so, they will have to go, he added.

Junior staff are being trained across all processes, reducing the need for senior employees. Since January, Wipro has a introduced certification test for all staff barring the senior management. Those who can’t score over 70 per cent and clear the test in three attempts are shown the door.

Employees said that many project teams, especially those in the financial services sector serving European or American companies, had been halved.

A software engineer, currently benched, said all benched staff had been told that if they couldn’t get into new teams within three months, they too would have to leave.

Generally, IT firms place 5 per cent of their employees under the non-performance rating. After being put through a mandatory improvement programme, about 0.5 to 0.8 per cent of them are asked to leave each year. However, bad market conditions and a drive for optimisation have meant that involuntary attrition has increased.

  15. Everything mentioned very true about infy, wipro and tcs. These companies are targetting senior employees as if company has faced huge losses. These stupid indian companies always want to make profit [Year on Year]. This really sucks. These companies will hire in bulk and fire in bulk.

  16. Wipro's manager Ms. Jyoti Shailendra Delievry Head Testing services Manikonda Hyderabad got promotion after she laid off 400 employees through faking non performance on their appraisals. She lied to 400 people shamelessly. When I met her she boasted about her promotion and how she had to think of firing 400 employees by thinking of fictitious non performing reasons. Shame on her!

  17. Wipro is layinf off people because of their foolish decisions! They knew in 2007 that the market is going down inspite of this fact, they hired freshers as if they have a trillion dollar project. Now they are throwing experienced and good resources and keeping the freshers. The reason for this is that they can quote a low price for freshers and that ways they can get new projects. Now, Wipro has all the junk stuff...good for nothing people who only know to butter their senior management. The senior management is happy with this. But soon they will realise what they lost when the market is up and running! Wipro tops the list of Worst company!

  18. Wipro does not meant for Talent. Only people who luckily passed, who has high influance can work for a long time and get promotion. Pratik Kumar and HR policy sucks.

  19. I worked Wipro for 5 Years. I have executed several projects and won several awards but I did not get any promotion or good salary hike. That is because I had showcased stupid politics managers who was ready to cutdown projects because to keep their positions for a longtime in onsite. When I tried to present it to Wipro management, one of the Delivery head realized wipro loss and he pushed project manager to offshore. He has taken a revange and put average rating appraisals to block promotions. This is the same politics in entire Wipro. If you are a good technical person, you cant servive here. If you are a silly and playing politics nicely and you dont have to learn, upgrade your skills here in wipro. As long as you asslick some of the wipro managers, all done for you. Thats it. Wipro sucks. HR policy sucks. MANY OF THE project managers sucks. whole wipro sucks because of full political team and not talanted team.

  25. WIPRO TECHNOLOGIES never join ….. Its a big mess. you will spoil Ur future if u join. WIPRO is a big fraud. it just fired many 1000s of employees saying that they don't have pf and bank statements from previous employers and that's after working for 2,3,4,5,6 years in wipro.

just imagine after working for this company for long time if they will give comments on Ur re leaving letter. what will be Ur future?

it means the 5 years of exp is waste….

really if I get chance I will hang all those middle level managers till death. bleady fuckers. their sins will pay off. they will suffer the pain some day.

I am ex employee of wipro, and what ever I am writing here is true…. wipro BVG team torchured me to accept that I dId fake. I never did fake, only reason they are asking me to accept this is that I don't have pf statement and bank statement. but my first company is a small company and they were not maintaining all these things even the pays were less at that time. I think now that company is good. Sorry boss but its true, mainly wipro has spoiled many good employees life. it has fired many of employees who got EE rating and even who earned lots of awards like feather in my cap, above and beyond. etc etc. wipro sucks…. never join wipro. its my advise to every fresher and ever experienced guy. wipro has fired almost 10000 to 15000 employees between 2008 June to till now.. that's the worst thing ever happened. never consider wipro as good company. I can clearly say that its work environment is good but its Management is worst. they say Policies but they never follow. there is no value for knowledge and technical skills.just don't join wipro. its like hell. be cautious.
