300 employees laid off by Univision Communications

Univision Communications Inc., the nation's top Hispanic broadcaster, on Friday laid off 300 people, or 6 percent of the work force, a spokeswoman confirmed. The company blamed the recession and the "downward pressure this has caused on advertising-related businesses" for the layoffs.

It did not say where the layoffs would occur, but noted that the weekend show, "Primer Impacto Fin de Semana," would be canceled effective immediately. The show aired Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. EST. The anchors Ilia Calderon and Satcha Pretto remain employed by Univision and contribute to the weekday version, "Primer Impacto." Univision did not say how much money would be saved in the move.
