Nokia cuts jobs worldwide, except in India

Hell-bent to cut costs, Finnish handset maker Nokia today said, it plans to cut 1,700 jobs worldwide. However the company claims it will not affect Indian operations in a big way. Does that confirmation come from another Nokia plan of cutting salaries in India, which isn’t yet disclosed.

Nokia employees 10,000 workers in India, with majority of them, 8,000 working in the manufacturing unit in Chennai, which the spokesperson said will not be affected. That leaves 2,000 other employees prone to layoffs.

In a statement today, Nokia said actions would be taken at its devices and market units as well as in the corporate development offices and global support functions.

Nokia’s spokesperson in India said, 'India continues to be a growth market for Nokia globally. Investments will continue to be in line with the opportunity. The impact on India will be minimal,” reports Economic Times.
