Filled Under:

Nokia 'voluntary resign' offer a hit

Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest maker of mobile phones, found 1,000 employees willing to resign in exchange for a severance package under a programme announced February 24.

“We received the 1,000 applications before Easter so the package is closed,” Eija-Riitta Huovinen, a spokeswoman for the Espoo, Finland-based company said by telephone.

The worldwide programme began March 1 and was scheduled to close May 31 or when the quota was filled.

Nokia was seeking up to 1,000 voluntary resignations to further reduce costs amid the global economic downturn. The company also appealed to employees to accept holiday time as payments, instead of cash, for overtime work in 2009.
