Kansas’ mass layoffs spike in 4Q 2008

Kansas saw a dramatic spike in mass layoffs in the fourth quarter of 2008, recording 25 events totaling 2,749 people, according to U.S. Department of Labor statistics.

That’s a significant increase from the eight mass layoffs affecting 754 people in third quarter 2008. A mass layoff involves 50 or more people from a single business. The numbers are a strong indicator the state and national economies continue to deteriorate.

Nationally, fourth quarter 2008 mass layoffs totaled 3,140 events, which resulted in 508,859 people losing their jobs. Both figures reached their highest levels in program history, according to labor department statistics.
