Adobe, Nokia team up to offer grants to software developers

Software developers: If you've got an idea for an app that can work on PCs, smart-phones and other devices, Adobe Systems and Nokia may have some cash to help you out.

The two companies are announcing the creation of a $10 million fund, which will dole out grants to help independent developers build applications that use their technology and work on multiple devices.

The application has to be based on Adobe's Flash platform and run on Nokia mobile devices. "It's not just a prize for a cool application," said Adobe's Anup Murarka, explaining that the fund will distribute grants as part of Adobe's Open Screen Project, which promotes Flash as a standard toolbox for building applications that provide a similar experience whether they are accessed on mobile phones, computers or TVs.

The fund will focus on applications that can be used for entertainment, social networking, productivity, gaming or news and information. Murarka, who is director of technology strategy and partner development for Adobe's platform business unit, said developers won't be asked to give up equity or rights to their ideas, but the sponsors may use the projects in marketing tied to the Open Screen Project.

Information on applying will be posted on the project's Web site: www.openscreenproject.org.
